The Network 21 project is entering its third stage -- the installation of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) electronic equipment in campus locations designated for connection to Network 21. To prepare for this phase of the project, the project team is asking departments to complete the Network 21 Stage 3 Survey. The survey is based on the information provided by departments from the Network 21 Allocation Report, the Department Planning Tool (DPT) information gathered last year, and service order requests which have been submitted. The survey contains a list of your department's NAMs and NAM-related information. These NAMs are currently designated for connection to the network.
The survey provides an opportunity for you to verify the accuracy of the NAM information and delete any NAMs you no longer wish to have connected to Network 21. Only NAMs listed on the survey will be cutover during Stage 3. The regular Service Order process must be used to connect additional NAMs to the Network 21 system. Information about service orders and potential charges can be obtained at http://net21.ucdavis.edu/SrvcOrd.htm. Important information about Network 21 policies and support can be obtained at http://net21.ucdavis.edu/newcut411.html. You are urged to examine this document as it contains information which will assist in your planning for connections to Network 21.
The survey also allows you to identify your Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) configuration. This information is required to implement the ATM technology, which will help ease physical boundaries imposed by traditional Local Area Networks (LANs). Departmental resources spread among several buildings may be consolidated into a single VLAN, thus making independent physical subnets unnecessary. The attached document: VLAN Information contains background information about this networking technology.
The Network 21 Stage 3 Survey packet contains:
1) Two worksheets that need to be completed for the survey:
Stage 3 Survey - NAM Verification
Stage 3 Survey - Department VLAN Worksheet
2) A reference sheet titled: List of Standardized Department Names for VLANs
3) A set of instructions to use in filling out the two survey worksheets
4) The VLAN reference document titled: VLAN Information
The information provided by each department in this survey allows the project team to verify the work completed thus far, and to prepare for the network configurations needed when installing the ATM technology. The survey must be received from the department or technical contact in order to maintain the Network 21 installation schedule. You will not be contacted to return the survey. If your survey is not received by the due date, your cutover will consist of the NAMs appearing on the survey and all of these NAMs will be configured into one VLAN for your department. Return your completed survey via campus mail to: Network 21 - Communications Resources.
The attached survey is not available electronically because web page security does not prevent a department from completing another department's survey. An account and password would be required for every department to ensure the integrity of the survey results. Ensuring that all departments have an account is a timely endeavor not afforded by the project. Once the surveys are completed and the results are recorded, the results will be available via the Network 21 web site for viewing or download.
Questions about the survey process or content should be directed to the Network 21 Consultants: JC Alden, 752-4824, John Martinez 752-8187, or Project Assistant Susan Stagner, 752-6021.
Thank you once again for your work and support in bringing Network 21 one step closer to reality.
