Advantages/Disadvantages

Ideal Use

Advantages

Disadvantages

Add Splitter

Two 10BaseT connections needed within same room, 100BaseT not needed for 3-5 years, and a 4 pair data NAM exists

  • Provides two 10BaseT connections
  • Does not require pulling new cable
  • Less expensive than two individual NAMs
  • Not 100BaseT capable
  • Only applies to 4 pair data NAMs numbered 75300-79999 and 60000-69999

Add New NAM

Not enough 10BaseT ready NAMs and no modifiable NAMs exist, and dedicated 10MB service is required or migration to 100BaseT is anticipated in the near future

  • Provides one 10BaseT connections
  • 100BaseT capable, cat 5 compliant
  • Can be combined with Splitter to yield two 10BaseT connections
  • Provides greatest growth potential with lowest life cycle cost
  • High initial cost

Allocation Guide - June 1996 - Historical Perspectives of Network 21 NAM Allocation

  1. All workstations or printers identified as "On 10BASE-T Now" from the May 96 NAM Need Survey that have a direct connection from the workstation or the printer to a NAM get a Network 21 port connection. Some departments responded to the May 96 NAM Need Survey incorrectly by identifying workstations or printers connnected with 10BASE-T via a dumb hub in the room as "On 10BASE-T Now" instead of "On Other Media Now". Recent field checks have corrected those responses. Port connections will be provided for 10BASE-T NAMs installed as a result of projects that were in progress or submitted as of June 1, 1996.

Network 21 Project Funding Will Provide for Each Room:

Survey Need?  NAMs Exist?  10BASE-T Ready NAMs Exist?  Printers or Workstations Direct Conn to NAM?
