As part of the Stage 3 cutover process, I.T. will provide monthly Network 21 Information Sessions. Network 21 Consultants will answer questions about cutover issues, notification, and cutover schedules. At cutover time, Cutover Implementation Teams are responsible for cutover to the Network 21 infrastructure and verifying connectivity.
Stage 3 Cutovers: Department cutovers will commence in early July 1998. In most cases, one department VLAN at a time will be cutover to the Stage 3 infrastructure. In some cases, a partial VLAN will be cutover at one time, with the remainder of the VLAN to be cutover on a separate scheduled date. All cutovers will be coordinated with the department technical point-of-contact (POC) in the following manner
Technical Support During Cutover: Support during the cutover process will be divided between the Cutover Team which will make an attempt to resolve all issues that can be done within a 15 minute window and the NOC Network 21 Trouble Team. It the problem cannot be resolved quickly, the problem will be escalated to the NOC Help Desk to dispatch an assigned Trouble Team Technician to resolve the issue. This allows the conversion team to continue on schedule while insuring the problem is documented and resolved. Problems not related to the Network 21 Cutover will follow the normal resolution processes.
IP Addresses: All Network 21 VLANs will be assigned a subnet in the 169.237.0.0 address range. All subnets in Network 21 buildings currently assigned to the 128.120.0.0 address range will transition to the 169.237.0.0 address range during cutover. Subnets in non-Network 21 buildings which currently use the 128.120.0.0 address range will not be transitioned to the 169.237.0.0 address range.
IT Responsibilities
Schedule Coordination: IT will coordinate reasonable downtime windows for the cutover process and coordinate the installation and cutover schedules. Departments will be notified approximately one month in advance of cutover. This notification will include a Cutover Package, which includes the following information:
Department Activities
Access and Security: In order to ensure cutovers proceed according to schedule, the departments need to ensure that the Implementation Teams have physical access to the NAMs for cutover. This includes making necessary security arrangements to have access to the site and/or individual rooms within the site. The department should also make arrangements to temporarily disarm any computer, device or building security alarms. Access to the NAM's is be necessary for network connectivity problems related to cabling.
TAG Team (Technical Assistance Group): If the department Network Administrator or Technical Point of Contact needs additional assistance to perform standard hardware and software changes required for cutover, the Technical Assistance Group is available on a recharge basis. For information contact the Temporary Employment Pool or visit the Network 21 Recharge Services page at http://net21.ucdavis.edu/TEPCRS.htm.
DNS Registration: Registration for each device IP address is recommended. The IP addresses for the DNS (Domain Name Server) should also be updated to 169.237.1.250 and 169.237.250.250. It is recommended that DNS registration information be submitted approximately one week in advance of the scheduled cutover.
NAM Changes: NAM moves, adds or changes which affect the scheduled cutover can be accomplished by submitting a Service Order Request (SOR) as described below. SOR's may be submitted up to two weeks prior to the scheduled cutover date. The Service Order Teams will complete any required work prior to Stage 3 cutover, and the affected NAMs will be included (or excluded in the case of a NAM deactivation) in the Stage 3 cutover. SOR's submitted less than two weeks from the scheduled cutover date will be completed by the Service Order Teams immediately after the Stage 3 cutover has been completed.
Network Services: Network services (DNS, electronic mail, etc.) will be available for both UCDNet and the Network 21 infrastructure. For more information on DNS registration requirements for Stage 3 cutover, see Domain Name Service Registration on the Network 21 home page. It is recommended that DNS registration information be submitted approximately one week in advance of the scheduled cutover.
